The Sustainable Fibre Alliance (SFA) is an international non-profit organization dedicated to promoting sustainability throughout the cashmere supply chain, encompassing all stages from herders in remote grazing regions to global retailers. The organization works to establish and implement a comprehensive global sustainability standard for cashmere production, with the aim of preserving and restoring fragile grassland ecosystems, promoting responsible land management, and reducing the environmental impact traditionally associated with cashmere production. In addition to environmental stewardship, the SFA emphasizes high standards of animal welfare, ensuring that cashmere goats are treated ethically and responsibly.
The organization also focuses on supporting the livelihoods of herding communities by securing fair and equitable economic returns for all participants along the supply chain, including local herders, processors, manufacturers, and international retailers. Through these efforts, the SFA ensures that internationally traded cashmere is produced in a manner that is environmentally responsible, socially equitable, and economically viable, contributing to the long-term resilience of both natural ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.
GOTS
Issuing authority : Control Union
Valid period : 2019/8/19 - 2020/8/19
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is an internationally recognised standard developed through collaboration among leading standard-setting organizations. Its primary purpose is to define requirements that ensure the organic status of textiles throughout the entire supply chain. The standard applies from the harvesting of raw materials, such as certified organic cotton, wool, or other natural fibers, through environmentally responsible and socially ethical manufacturing processes. GOTS specifies strict limits on chemical inputs, including pesticides, fertilizers, and processing chemicals, while also setting requirements for water and energy use, waste management, and ecological protection during production.
Moreover, GOTS requires compliance with international social standards, including fair labor practices, safe working conditions, and the prohibition of child and forced labor. The standard further covers all processing stages, including spinning, weaving, knitting, dyeing, finishing, and labeling, to ensure traceability and transparency. Certified products must carry the GOTS label, providing consumers with credible assurance of the product’s organic integrity and adherence to sustainable practices. By maintaining comprehensive and globally recognised criteria, GOTS promotes both environmental sustainability and social responsibility across the textile industry.
